Everything is made in China these days. My coffee mug, stapler, calculator, headphones, breath mints tin, binder clips, shoes…all made in China. But yesterday my mother-in-law handed me a small American flag made in the United States. It was strange to see that otherwise extinct “Made In The USA” printing on the handle, but it’s apparently something that feel very strongly about when it comes to flags.

Minnesota has passed a new law requiring every American flag sold to be made in the USA. Violations are a misdemeanor and punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail. A number of other states follow suit with tamer laws making such requirements for public schools and other state funded organizations.
